 World Press Freedom Day

World Press Freedom Day is an annual event celebrated on May 3rd to raise awareness about the significance of press freedom and to remind governments worldwide of their responsibility to uphold the right to freedom of expression, as stated in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This event offers a platform to honor the fundamental principles of press freedom, evaluate the state of press freedom globally, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives while performing their duty. The UN General Assembly proclaimed this day in 1993 based on a recommendation by UNESCO's General Conference.

Each year, World Press Freedom Day has a unique theme to highlight a particular aspect of press freedom. In 2021, the theme was "Information as a Public Good," emphasizing the importance of reliable information and the need for journalism to be supported as a public good.

Overall, World Press Freedom Day emphasizes that the press plays a crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and democracy. Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right that must be protected and defended at all times.
